About Dr. David W. Wahl

Dr. David W. Wahl is a social psychologist and sex researcher. His work is centered on all aspects of human sexuality. In gathering the sexual histories of research participants, Dr. Wahl is looking to help others better understand their sexual selfhood and open the conversation on sexual desires and behaviors.

Dr. Wahl explains: “My questions about human sexuality began when my best friend brought his father’s cache of adult magazines onto the school bus in grade school. I was raised in an ultra-conservative town where sex was taboo and never discussed. My questions had to wait until fifth grade, when I found a copy of Alfred Kinsey’s ‘Sexual Behavior in the Human Male.’ As my questions began to receive answers, I wanted to learn all I could about sexuality. I also wanted to answer other people’s questions. Sex is a foundational aspect of the human experience. Being knowledgeable of our sexuality contributes to the development of our sexual selfhood, provides the ability to make informed decisions about our sexuality, and enhances our overall state of humanness.”

Dr. Wahl is currently in the process of publishing a wealth of articles on sexuality and is working on a book about the social-sexual problems in human sexuality. He also writes a weekly column for Psychology Today (This Sexual Self) and teaches courses on human sexuality, sex and gender, women’s studies, intimate relationships, and social psychology. In addition to all of that, he spends much of his day talking to people about their sexuality and answering the many questions sent to him.
